News MTC's Team Prodigies win Home Automation Challege

Apprentices trained in the MTC’s Advanced Manufacturing Training Centre in Coventry have won this year’s Home Automation Challenge, run by the Institution of Mechanical Engineers.

The aim of the challenge was to challenge apprentices to improve a device to make life at home or gardening easier.

First year apprentices, Paige Beard, Richard Smith and William Burton made up Team Prodigies who are trained at the Manufacturing Technology Centre, created an automated irrigation system. Judges were impressed by their creativity and design skills, and their ability to identify a specific problem such as grandparents having difficulty watering plants.

Paige Beard, from Team Prodigies, commented:

“We are not only proud to have won this national competition but we feel privileged to have taken part in such an event, allowing us to showcase our newly learnt skills as first year apprentices.”

The MTC also had a second team involved in the challenge, Team C.O.R.K, who created an automated accessibility shelf, allowing for easy access and creating more space.

New high spec equipment and software for research projects is continually coming into the business. This gives many training opportunities and with work being so varied I don't think I would ever have the opportunity to get bored at the MTC. The MTC is also very determined to progress engineers to chartered status. This supports my development but also awards me with an internationally recognised qualification.
