New team to spearhead innovation in construction and infrastructure

A highly-experienced team has been assembled at the Manufacturing Technology Centre to spearhead a technology revolution to the UK construction and infrastructure sectors.
The newly-created team (pictured) comprises Phill Cartwright (right), the former chief technology officer at the High Value Manufacturing Catapult; Susan Hone-Brookes (centre), a Chartered Engineer with more than 30 years’ experience and a board member of the Chartered Institution of Building Services Engineers (CIBSE); and Trudi Sully (left), who prior to joining the MTC was Innovate UK’s relationship manager for the High Value Manufacturing Catapult.
The trio will bring vast experience and know-how as the MTC looks to support a significant step-change to the construction and infrastructure sectors. They will be backed by the full support of the MTC Group, including access to its world-leading engineers and state-of-the-art equipment.
Under the banner of Working Together: Transforming Construction, the MTC is taking a collaborative approach and looking to bring together major global corporations to jointly oversee a radical shake-up of the industry. The aim is to support the sector in meeting the targets set out in the Government’s Construction 2025 strategy of reduced costs, faster delivery, lower emissions and increased exports. This is echoed in the Government’s National Infrastructure Delivery Plan 2016-2021.
The MTC, which has had significant impact developing new technologies and manufacturing systems for a range other sectors including defence, automotive and aerospace, will stress the benefits of adapting technologies like automation, robotics, 3D printing and virtual reality.
Hone-Brookes, who joined the MTC from construction giant Laing O’Rourke, said: “Having worked in the construction industry for more than 30 years I am fully aware of its strengths and weaknesses.
“The Construction 2025 strategy has set out an ambitious vision for the sector of a 33 per cent reduction in whole life costs, 50 per cent reduction in delivery periods and a 50 per cent improvement in the emission of greenhouse gases.
“In addition to that, the Farmer Review, published last year for the Construction Leadership Council, has issued a stern warning calling for the industry to modernise or die. The recommendations include investing in research and development, embracing new technologies, increasing collaboration and ensuring it has a future skilled workforce to meet demands.
“The MTC is perfectly primed to be a catalyst for change in the construction and infrastructure sectors using the transfer of knowledge and its manufacturing capability, already proven in other industries. Working together we can transform the sectors. We are very much at the start of an exciting and challenging journey.”
The MTC already has the support of the UK arm of construction giant Skanska, which joined the MTC last month with a commitment to develop new technologies for the industry. The MTC, which is communicating with a number of other businesses in the sectors, has a growing construction and infrastructure portfolio with Amey, HS2, Autodesk and Forterra all members.

We have played a vital role inspiring British manufacturing by providing an agile low-risk environment for innovation, producing a future workforce through our apprenticeship scheme and supporting SMEs. We can draw on all of that to deliver solutions for the construction and infrastructure industry from SMEs through to the major organisations.
“To help us achieve this, we have brought together Phill, Susan and Trudi who are extremely knowledgeable about the sector and are passionate about seeing it succeed.

Phill spent 15 months in the role of chief technology officer at the High Value Manufacturing Catapult joining from Laing O’Rourke, where he was director in the Engineering Excellence Group. He has held a wealth of senior roles including six years as head of electrical power and control systems at Rolls-Royce. He has also successfully delivered significant power and energy infrastructure projects, integrated new technologies and manufacturing processes in China, India, Brazil and USA with ABB, ALSTOM and AREVA.
He was the founding chair of the Institution of Engineering & Technology (IET) Power Sector Executive and has been an active member and adviser to the UK Government’s Nuclear Industry Council. He is a Fellow of the IET, a visiting Professor in Energy Systems at The University of Manchester and The University of Strathclyde, the author of numerous technical journal papers, co-author of two books and several patents related to the mathematical modelling, control and integration of energy systems.
Susan Hone-Brookes, chief engineer, strategic development.
Susan is a chartered engineer and a Fellow of the Chartered Institution of Building Services Engineers and sits on the board.
She joined the MTC in January 2017 from Laing O’Rourke (LOR) where she was the sustainability engineering leader working within the Engineering Excellence group.
Susan has been an engineer for more than 30 years, beginning her career with Crown house Technologies Ltd, a subsidiary of Tarmac, Carillion and LOR.
Susan’s academic achievement includes a master’s degree in Sustainability and Building Energy Design, and a BEng Honours degree in Building Service engineering. She is a qualified BREEAM assessor, Accredited Professional (AP), Low Carbon Consultant (LCC) and a qualified ESOS auditor.
Trudi Sully, relationship manager, business development.
Trudi is the Sector Manager for Construction and Infrastructure at the MTC on the Business Development Team. She joined the MTC in October 2016 from Innovate UK, where she worked on the Catapult Programme and acted as the Relationship Manager for the High Value Manufacturing Catapult. The role included the strategic development, management and review of a portfolio of funding agreements worth in excess of £100m per year. Trudi brings over 20 years of experience of strategic stakeholder management from both public and private sector roles across a broad range of industries, influencing decisions and policy making within government departments in the UK and Europe as well as from SME’s to multinationals.
