Opportunities for aspiring engineers to train with leading experts at MTC's new training centre

Advanced engineering apprenticeships create skills needed by industry
Recruitment is underway at the MTC's new Lloyds Bank Advanced Manufacturing Training Centre (AMTC) for the next intake of apprentices, who could make a significant contribution to shaping the future of high value manufacturing in the UK.
With opportunities to train with the latest technology and learn alongside leading experts and prominent academic partners, apprentices will become equipped with the skills needed to help British manufacturing stay globally competitive.
There are places for 40 new recruits who will follow the 97 apprentices already taking part in the centre’s ground-breaking advanced engineering training programme at Ansty Park near Coventry.
The AMTC's engineering apprenticeships are designed to provide premium training for the next generation of engineers and technicians.
At the official opening of the new purpose-built training facility Business Secretary, Sajid Javid praised the centre for playing "...a key role in turning young people from across the Midlands into the engineering leaders of the future."
Structured to produce people who are specialists, apprenticeships at the centre enable recruits to gain a solid foundation in engineering skills and confidence in areas that underpin high value manufacturing, focusing on four core disciplines:
Intelligent automation technology; including robots, drives and sensor technology; CNC machining, including computer aided design (CAD) and advanced 3D printing; metrology - measurement and inspection of materials, products, coordinate measurement machines (CMM) including 3D scanning; joining – materials and techniques in multiple disciplines, including advanced welding, laser cladding and composites.
This is backed up by AMTC training in project management, team working, and health and safety, which culminates in professional registration with the IMechE as EngTech.
On completion of the programme, AMTC apprentices will gain the following formal qualifications:
- Level 3 Technical Qualification in Engineering
- Level 2 PEO Units minimum of 3 (Practical Units)
- Level 3 NVQ in Mechanical Manufacturing Engineering
- Functional Skills in Numeracy / Literacy / ICT
- Personnel Learning and Thinking Skills (PLTS)
- Employee Rights and Responsibilities (ERR)
Apprentices are employed throughout their apprenticeship programme, which also includes work-related project training and the opportunity to test and develop their skills in placements with MTC member companies, which include some of the UK's major global manufacturers.
After completing the programme, apprentices can, if they wish, choose to progress to degree level education or complete alternative further qualifications, providing a springboard to an exciting career in a thriving sector.

The MTC has already won national recognition for its success in developing the engineers of the future and for displaying the highest standards of excellence in employing apprentices. Last year it was named as one of the top 100 apprenticeship employers in the country by leading UK skills development body, City & Guilds, winning praise for its success in tackling the current skills shortage and developing a new generation of engineers with its flagship four-year apprentice programme.
