Ken Young

Technology Director

"The MTC is undoubtedly an exciting place to work. We are at the start of a journey that will strengthen the bridge between academia and industry."

As Technology Director of the MTC, Professor Ken Young oversees a programme of research delivering innovative technology from TRL4 to TRL7. The aim of this is to mature research from laboratory demonstrator level, through to a proven process operating at volume.

Prior to joining the MTC at the start of 2011, Prof. Young spent 20 years at Warwick University working in WMG. Here he ran a large number of industrial research projects in the automotive, aerospace, horticulture and pharmaceuticals sectors. He successfully ran projects funded by EPSRC, TSB and the European Union amongst others and was the director of the EPSRC funded Warwick Innovative Manufacturing Centre for seven years. This centre delivered projects worth over £8M in environmentally friendly vehicle technology.

Prof. Young sits on the TSB automotive industry advisory panel and is the chairman of the National Measurement System ‘Engineering and Flow working group. He has also been chairman of the British Automation and Robot Association for ten years.

New high spec equipment and software for research projects is continually coming into the business. This gives many training opportunities and with work being so varied I don't think I would ever have the opportunity to get bored at the MTC. The MTC is also very determined to progress engineers to chartered status. This supports my development but also awards me with an internationally recognised qualification.
