The University of Birmingham has a strong pedigree of working in partnership with business and applying its research to business-led challenges. A longstanding relationship with Rolls-Royce through the University Technology Partnership in Materials was instrumental in driving their engagement with the Manufacturing Technology Centre.

As a founding partner, the University has led and supported the initial formation of the MTC and subsequently the development of activities under the Net Shape Manufacturing and underpinning materials characterisation at MTC. The Pro-Vice-Chancellor for Engineering and Physical Sciences sits on the Board of MTC and works closely with the Management team in shaping the direction of MTC

The University recognises the importance of business-led innovation and how collaboration between business and the university will drive UK growth. Our partnership with MTC creates significant opportunities for both our academic research as well as our student experience. The MTC is unique and i) offers the opportunity for new innovative research from the University to be pulled through to commercial application, providing the ability to undertake research on to production-scale facilities that would not otherwise be available; ii) generates new industry-led research challenges that our academics, working with the MTC and its member companies, can collaborate on to address; iii) provides opportunities for the placement of our academic staff and students and the development of our doctoral engineers; iv) provides a critical mechanism enabling the University to readily demonstrate the impact of its manufacturing-related research.
