MTC response to GBEN annoucement

  • Civil Nuclear

With Great British Energy – Nuclear (GBEN) awarding a contract to Rolls-Royce the UK has taken a decisive step in committing to next-generation nuclear and asserting its position as a serious contender in global energy.

This is more than just an investment in technology. Rolls-Royce’s fleet-build model strengthens domestic industry, creating jobs and securing long-term nuclear capability. The contract positions the UK to scale nuclear energy at pace and secure grid resilience for decades to come.

To capitalise on this opportunity, four urgent steps must now follow. We need clarity on regions, localities and timelines so industry can mobilise without delay. Next, GBEN must establish an independent qualification platform, equipping suppliers with the expertise and readiness needed to deliver at scale. Thirdly, the government must send a clear signal by placing early orders, ensuring supply chain companies have the confidence to invest in infrastructure, workforce and manufacturing capacity. Finally, regulation must be streamlined with a firm investment decision date and a clear workback plan to prevent delays.

This is a defining moment. If decisive action is taken now, the UK can shape the future of the global SMR sector, driving job creation, investment and energy security. But any hesitation could mean missing a once-in-a-generation opportunity.
