Professor Paul Conway

Paul Conway is a Manufacturing Engineer with experience in tier 1 automotive manufacturing supply chains and a long career in manufacturing research at Loughborough University, where he is Professor of Manufacturing Processes.
Throughout his career, Paul has made sustained and internationally recognised contributions to electronics manufacturing technology, innovating for better manufacturing process control and product design without compromising either, to realise improved quality and reliability for industry. He has led significant projects (>£100m) defined by and delivering to industry requirements, exploiting physical and materials sciences frequently in novel ways.
Paul was Dean of one of the UK’s largest engineering schools (2014-2025) and Director of EPSRC’s Innovative Electronics Manufacturing Research Centre and Centre for Doctoral Training in Embedded Intelligence. He was also a Member (2014-17) and then Chair (2017-20) of EPSRC’s Manufacturing the Future Strategic Advisory Team, providing strategic advice to develop, modify and implement research and training strategy.
He was appointed in 2018 to the UK’s Research Excellence Framework Panel B, Engineering for REF2021 and is now Deputy Chair for Engineering for the next REF exercise in 2029.
He has provided substantial service to engineering at national and international levels including with MTC since its’ inception.
He is passionate about improving gender balance and equality in the profession and the development of early career engineers.
