Mel studied at Kingston University where he gained a BSc (Hons) in geography and subsequently an Honorary Doctorate and has held a number of executive positions across a wide range of sectors with the likes of TNT International, ADI Group, SIG and Amey.
He has been involved in a number of mergers and acquisitions including ADI and Securicor and Amey and Enterprise. Mel joined Amey in 2001 and became chief executive in 2003. Under his tenure, he successfully guided Amey through its sale to Ferrovial and into profitability.
In 2016, Mel retired from Amey, having transformed it into one of the UK’s largest engineering, construction and infrastructure companies – delivering and constructing vital projects across the UK including key road and rail such as the electrification of the Great Western Mainline and the maintaining the iconic Forth Road Bridge in Scotland.
In 2011, he also became a Non-Executive Director of SIG plc, a leading European supplier of insulation, exteriors, interiors and specialist construction products and has subsequently joined the Boards of HS2, London City Airport, DofE and most recently MOLA
Mel joined the board of the MTC on 1st October 2016.
